Since its inception in a small studio near Byron Bay, Australia in 2019, Softedge has set out to design and produce premium tableware with a sculptural twist and color forward aesthetic. In early 2023, facing ongoing material shortages and manufacturing bottlenecks, the studio pressed pause on in-house production in search of a more sustainable model. Founder Layla Cluer's journey landed in Hasami, a town in Japan's southern island of Kyushu — the heartland of Japanese porcelain and the site of over 400 years of continuous porcelain production. It was here that Softedge found the perfect combination of skilled craftsmanship, collaborative spirit, and physical closeness to raw materials. In closer partnership with the highly specialized artisans and workshops of Hasami, Softedge reimagines the act of eating without compromising on the function or quality of the objects that enable it.
